To support this period of change, the Council is looking to strengthen its committed Building Control team through the appointment of a Registered Building Inspector. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Council's Building Safety Act responsibilities and delivering high quality Building Control services across the borough and beyond.

You will join a dynamic and motivated team, undertaking restricted functions and activities appropriate to your level of competency, while receiving support and supervision to further develop your skills and progress your career. The Council welcomes applications from candidates currently registered at Class 2A or above.

Responsibilities

Carry out a full range of Class 2A and 2B Building Control functions and work unsupervised on:
Category A residential dwelling houses for a single household under 7.5m in height.
Category B residential flats and dwelling houses under 11m in height.

Check Building Regulation applications for compliance within authorised competency levels and, where appropriate, under supervision for more complex applications.

Undertake site inspections from commencement through to completion of works, including occasional inspections outside normal working hours.

Provide advice and guidance on Building Regulations and associated legislation to customers, clients and stakeholders.

Enforce relevant Building Control legislation, policies and statutory provisions to protect customers, residents and the public.

Investigate, order and supervise, as appropriate, demolition works and dealing with notifications 
made under Section 80 of the Building Act 1984.   

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments, external agencies, partners and customers.

Attend meetings and represent the Council in Building Control matters.

Deliver excellent customer service and promote safe, compliant and sustainable development throughout the borough.

Support the Council's vision, values, policies and procedures, including Health & Safety, Equality, Customer Care and Sustainability objectives.

Contribute to delivering a high-quality, efficient and cost-effective Building Control service within agreed timescales and budgets.

Essential qualifications/skills
Registration as a Class 2A and 2B Registered Building Inspector, maintaining competency through approved assessment schemes.
HNC, HND or NVQ Level 4 qualification in Building Studies or a related construction discipline.
Willingness to undertake further training and to work towards Degree / Chartered Corporate Membership level status of RICS, CABE or CIOB.
Theoretical knowledge and understanding of the full range of duties expected of a Class 2A and 2B Registered Building Inspector.
Excellent communication skills together with the ability to present the Building Control Service to customers.
