About

We are looking to appoint 2 self-motivated and ambitious registered Building Control Surveyors to join our highly professional and successful Building Control Team.

You will need to hold min Class 2F or 3 registrations with the Building Safety Regulator and have Chartered Member, Member or Fellow Chartered Member of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) or alternative acceptable professional body

You will have substantial experience and understanding of the role and functions of Building Control and have a sound knowledge of the Building Regulations, Approved Documents, allied legislation and enforcement procedures.

You’ll have experience of dealing with dangerous buildings and structures and implementing enforcement action when necessary.

Hold Corporate Membership of CABE / RICS or acceptable alternative.

You’ll need to hold Class 2F or 3 Registration with the Building Safety Regulator in respect of Plans assessment and inspection activities.

You’ll need to be able to participate in the Councils out of hours emergency call out service.

You will possess excellent communication, interpersonal and IT skills and be able to work both individually and as part of a team.

You will hold a full, valid driving licence and have unrestricted use of a suitable vehicle for business purposes or be able to otherwise demonstrate the ability to travel to locations in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Undertake assessment of building works and applications for compliance against the requirements of the Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Undertake site inspections in connection with building works as directed for the purposes of ensuring building regulations are being complied with.
  • In the interests of public safety and protection, to assess and undertake any reasonable actions to protect the public from dangerous structures, unauthorised works, demolition work and works that form obstructions to the public highway.
  • Participate in an out of hour’s emergency call out rota to assess and deal with dangerous buildings and structures as part of a professional team, providing a 24-hour rapid response service for dangerous structure incidents throughout the Borough.
  • When necessary, instigate enforcement procedures against non-compliant building works in accordance with Building Control and the Council’s enforcement policies. Prepare reports and statements and appear in court as a witness as necessary.
  • Liaise with Clients, Contractors, Principal designers and other stakeholders to help ensure materials, construction practices etc. comply with all current legislation and codes of practice.
  • Work efficiently and professionally within statutory timescales and as directed by service provisions and key performance indicators.
  • Assess and analyse basic structural calculations and details submitted.
  • To personally work as an integrated and flexible member of the Building Control Team and contribute to productive and efficient team working.
  • Maintain precise and contemporaneous records.

Essential qualifications/skills
• Computer literate, experienced user of Microsoft Office suite.
• Awareness of relevant Health & Safety legislation in of sources of information order to ensure your own safety and the safety of your team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Able to deal with the needs of customers in a wide variety of circumstances including complex enquiries and complaints.
• Understanding of the requirements of the role and the function of Building Control and have a sound knowledge of the Building Regulations, Approved Documents, allied legislation and technical documents associated with the building control function.
• An awareness of relevant health & safety legislation to ensure your own safety and the safety of more junior staff under your supervision.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and having a customer service and quality focused approach.
• Have a commitment to on-going professional development by ensuring that CPD records are kept up to date.
• Ability to undertake site inspections and work at height or in confined spaces.
• Knowledge and understanding of best practice and new innovations and developments in the industry.
• Have clear and precise written and oral communication skills, with the ability to listen to, and influence others.
Experience
• Substantial experience and understanding of the role and functions of Building Control and have a sound knowledge of the Building Regulations, Approved Documents, allied legislation and enforcement procedures.
Desirable qualifications/skills
Experience of court proceedings.
