Join us to make a difference and build better for local people
In Kensington and Chelsea, we put local people at the heart of decision-making, working in partnership with them to provide quality services that are responsive, effective and efficient. Working together and in partnership with everyone that has an impact on the lives of our resident, we strive to learn from each other, and continually adapt.
We’re making an additional 40% investment in the Building Control service and the people that work to deliver it. We are increasing the size of the team, thereby offering excellent opportunities for you to progress and are committed to each person’s learning and development, whether that’s by giving you the opportunity to study for and obtain a professional accreditation or encouraging and trusting everyone to reach their full potential. We believe that’s how we keep building better for the public – by starting within.
We know the importance of our role, and promote a cohesive, supportive and open environment, where we come together with our shared purpose of making a difference.
As a Senior Building Control Surveyor, we’ll look to you to undertake plans examination and vetting of construction details to determine compliance for the purpose of issuing a decision notice or vetting letter. You will also inspect site works to determine compliance with the Building Regulations for the purpose of issuing a completion certificate. This means conducting the appraisal of fire safety measures and the provision of means of escape on both residential and commercial applications. You will also deal with the regularisation of building work, as well as carrying out surveys of dangerous and neglected structures as an authorised Dangerous Structure Engineer, and also enforce the building regulations in the borough.
As this is a senior role, we’ll trust you to step up and own your tasks with less supervision.

We welcome people who come from the public and private sector. The most important thing is that you have the ambition to take on more responsibility. You don’t need to have high rise residential experience, but strong all-round experience in residential and commercial buildings is important.
Your knowledge of the building control regime, and main building safety legislation will be vital. You’ll also need to have a thorough understanding of fire safety and means of escape from buildings, including for residential buildings over 11m and commercial developments.
Being a great communicator, you’ll need to be good with people too, mentoring junior members of your team to help them make progression. On top of this, you’ll need excellent knowledge of the Approved Inspector Regulations in relation to the role of the Building Control Authority.
In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.
